Whoa, this bitch! Flaubert's expert attention to detail and realism aside, Madame Bovary is a high-falutin' slut. I found the prose slow because of its dryness and explanatory nature at times, but it does give the reader an exact visual. I'm glad I've read this, but damn. Girl's got some issues.

Det var en gripande och spännande bok. Ibland var de gamla orden (och tveksamma översättningarna) svåra att förstå men var inte ett problem i stort.
It took me ages to read this book ( around 4 months to be exact) to because it was boring but because I had too much going on in my life. But whenever I did pick the book up, I got completely hooked.
The story had a very strong theme of adultery but I surprisingly didn't hate it. In fact, I loved the writing. Even though it was translated into English from French, the prose was rhythmic and flowy.
I did not feel very sorry for Doctor Bovary because he was so different from Madame Bovary that her suffocation in the marriage made a lot of sense.

Madame Bovary is extraordinary at a technical level. I paid more attention to words & writing and found myself laughing quite a few times. The truly objective narration, the non-likeable protagonists (shades of the anti-hero made famous in Breaking Bad), the criticisms of high society/romanticism/the church/quack science, and the juxtapositions of romantic affairs with prizes for manure at the Agricultural fair or a priest shouting about damnation--are all flawlessly done. Madame Bovary might be one of the most memorable characters in all of literature, but the rest of the cast of characters that round out the novel are flawlessly written. Monsieur Homais might be my favorite.
Even so, Madame Bovary wasn't among my top tier of classic fiction. I can't place my finger on exactly why and I'll be thinking about this novel for a long time. But ultimately I favor Victor Hugo or Thomas Hardy who make many of the same criticisms while portraying virtuous women squashed by the wheel of high society (a la Esmeralda or Tess).
