Very strong writing, with both a darkly honest and uplifting theme. I thought it would be too patriotic for me near the beginning but I think she handled the topic throughout the book very well!

Like the Four Winds, this book was a revelation in shining a light on so many things that I didn't know. In this case, about the Vietnam War. I really didn't know that people had been so unkind to returning soldiers or the extent to which women had participated on the front lines. Frankie's journey is tortuous, but i think that I had a hard time investing as fully as I might have done because the runaround dramas were so predictable. The bones of the story are very compelling but I think it bordered on soap opera a bit too much for my taste.
This book won’t be for everyone. It’s gory. It’s dark. Sometimes… most times… you just want to shake Frankie to get it together and question her decisions. But, it’s an incredible depiction of how women were unvalued and underserved during the 1960s and 1970s. It’s a true tale of finding yourself and your purpose within yourself. Not through work, not through men, but through yourself.

A better title for this would have been “the woman”-singular since it was really only one woman’s perspective of serving and returning from Vietnam. I kept waiting for a POV shift and it never came. As with all of KH’s stories, I loved the powerful storytelling and historical context. I had goosebumps and tears in my eyes turning the last page. Lost a star for me for redundancy in the plot and lack of changing pov. Still a great story, especially if you like historical fiction and need a break from all the WWII novels that saturate that genre
