I don’t usually enjoy war stories but this was a great piece of historical fiction based on the Vietnam war, with the American POV. I enjoyed the sisterhood of the women behind the scenes of a war that should have never happened, in the hands of a lousy administration.

I really enjoyed this book!! It was emotional, it was beautiful, and I learned a lot from it and gained so much respect for our veterans. I became so invested in the characters despite their flaws and I personally couldn’t guess any of the plot twists (I’ve seen otherwise in other reviews, maybe that’s just me!).

I did have two gripes. The first of which is I would have appreciated some context about the war going into this story, I don’t feel like the book provided a lot of context. By the end, it was said that the war wasn’t even necessary, but it wasn’t explained a lot. I appreciated the research that went into every other aspect of this book so I felt like this could have been expounded on more for a more immersive experience.
Second of all, I felt like the romance took over most of the story. The level of detail that was given for the intimacy scenes also took the book a couple notches down. I feel like I take a book less seriously the more there is a focus on romance and sex, but that might just be me personally. I don’t want to read a book like this purely for the romance but I found myself being more interested in the romance than the story itself.

On that note, I really admired Frankie’s moral compass, even when she did things wrong she had a strong resolve that she needed to change. I related to that a lot more than most character leads where I feel like they have a very flexible morality.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and truly couldn’t put it down! My gripes are minor and very minimally affected my final impression of the book. Will definitely be recommending this to friends and family!
