Maybe a 3.5 rounded up. I learned so much about the war, the brutality, the people (especially the women) in it, and its after effects. So many stories about the war end with the person's/character's time in Vietnam. But this booked told the whole story — from before shipping out to many years after the war.

I really appreciated Frankie's character growth, the raw portrayal of her challenges during and after the war. The most emotional relationship for me was Frankie and her father.

My biggest reason for knocking off a star or so is that I didn't care for the romantic storylines.
SpoilerThey were too similar. One of them would have been ok but I felt two of the same nature/plot was unrealistic and redundant.

I had extremely high expectations for this book after reading "The Nightingale." Needless to say it did not live up to those. I do feel Hannah's references and depiction of this historical time, the Vietnam war, and the aftermath (PTSD and addiction) was very well researched and definitely interesting to read about.

However, Frances (FMC) was whiney, and needy. I get it she was growing as a person but dang some of the content was difficult to get through. It is mentioned over and over about how women can be heroes, so I certainly do not understand why she was always in need of a man and sex to be okay. As another reviewer put it, "the romance in this story was obnoxiously awful," and it worked against the overall message of the book.

Don't think I would ever recommend this one, and now, am not sure I will read another book by Hannah.
