Bit of a slog to get through, I didn’t get that “I can’t put this book down” feeling until maybe the last 100 pages.
One of my favourite series of all time, this book is a solid start to the trilogy. I'll never get bored of reading it. 5 magic stars!

This had potential but it took the idea of not trusting the other side too far. I know lots of books make the jump too quickly, if someone is your sworn enemy, it shouldn't be easy to forgive them but it took all of the book and it was just frustrating. The entire plot was her trying to hide, then not trusting them, until the very end. The whole the high lord is evil/doing necromancy is going to be interesting but it was the only real excitement of the book
Graphic: Classism
Moderate: Bullying, Confinement, Sexism, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail

I was frustrated with the beginning as they took so freaking long to capture her, but I still really enjoyed it. My favourite characters are Lord Rothen and Dannyl, obviously 😂
Everybody's opinion is going to differ and personally, I can't wait to read the next book.
It's a really quick read and honestly I think I'm a sucker for anything fantasy.
Keep in mind Sonea is a teen and this looks like Trudi's first published book.
Also please note, it was published in 2001...

This is what I think of when I think of classic young adult fantasy, I was fully engrossed in this from the very start, and I am excited to continue on with the story and find out where Sonea’s story will go.
This is a classic chosen one tale, with Sonea finding out she has magic that is usually reserved for the upper class. I think that seeing her avoid the magicians and try to out wit them was enjoyable, especially with the other perspectives, and seeing them constantly underestimate her, and what she could, and would be willing, to do to protect herself and her people.
Character wise, we have a range of different archetypes, with the wise teacher, the powerful leader who is hiding things, along with the thief who is looking out for the FMC. And yet, despite them all falling into these roles, they are still unique characters who have their flaws, or have overlooked a key reason that Sonea wouldn’t trust them, just because it’s not something that would occur to them, living in the inner city.
