An incredibly impactful story that transcends and reinvents the romance genre. Superb.

I really enjoyed the historical aspects of this book.
The love stories were a bit unbelievable, but that’s okay.
The picture painted of old Cuba and new Cuba was intriguing. Learned a lot that I didn’t know about Cuba.
Would recommend

I enjoyed this book a lot! It alternates between two time periods and I really loved the grandmothers chapters. The writing was nice enough, perhaps a little clunky in places. I didn't know much about Cuban history and loved this glimpse into it.

I love a dual perspective historical fiction novel. I had little to no knowledge of Cuba, so I learned a lot reading this story.
Told by Elisa Perez in 1958 and her granddaughter, Marisol Ferrera, in 2017, this incredible story lets us in to Elisa’s life as the wealthy daughter of Emilio, owner of a sugar empire and supporter of Marco Batista, as Fidel Castro strives to take power. Elisa’s life begins to crumble around her and her family’s safety becomes uncertain.
Marisol’s journey is a somber one, as she fulfills her grandmother’s last wish to take her ashes back to Cuba once she has passed away.
This was such a beautiful story. I truly enjoyed it and plan to read another one of Chanel Cleeton’s books about Elisa’s sister, Beatriz.
