May 2024 Doing some comfort reading as I face surgery on my shoulder on July 1. Loved how Russell and Holmes helped Marsh Hughenfort (aka Mahmoud) find an heir so that he and his cousin Ali could return to the Middle East.

Justice Hall is fun entry in a mystery series, but it also discusses issues of family obligation and the impact of war. It is a powerful look at one man's struggle between his commitment to his family and the pursuit of his passions. It was so interesting to revisit these characters (Marsh/Mahmoud and Ali/Alistair) in such a different context. And, of course, it was a great Mary Russell & Sherlock Holmes mystery! Thoroughly enjoyable!

I got put off this series after finding the last couple of episodes pretty tedious. That was over three years ago and for some reason, I'm not quite sure myself, I thought I'd give Mary Russell another chance. And I'm very glad I did because I really enjoyed this book.

Mary and Holmes get caught up in untangling the inheritance of the seventh Duke of Beauville - in the beginning the plot seems pretty thin and there isn't really much mystery about it. It develops into a decent story though and I found it to be a good page turner towards the end.

Hope the next books in the series are as fun as this one.

Satisfying entry in the series. The era and the setting gave it some Downton Abbey vibes. The pace was fairly brisk, and we get to see some characters from a previous installment again, as well as meet some delightful new ones.

It had been a while since I read a Holmes & Russell story. It was like slipping into a comfortable pair of shoes. Well-written, interesting topic--but a slightly disappointing ending. Otherwise, I would have given a full four stars. So, three and a half stars instead.

To get anywhere near the most out of this book, you need to have read the preceding book in the series. I read them back to back and it worked perfectly for me. Really good clever stuff but also incredibly sad at times.

Yet another Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes story finds them reunited with some of the characters from O Jerusalem in a very different setting--a rich old noble English family's majestic manor. I think these stories are more fun when Mary and Sherlock are off having adventures; the staid English society life can be a little dull even with all this murder and intrigue. I also thought the end was kind of predictable, but I guess the story was entertaining enough. B.

2017 Reading Challenge #2: That’s been on your TBR list for way too long and #33: set in two different time periods.

I really enjoyed this mystery. It made me want to go back and read O Jerusalem again (it's been awhile since I read it) to see the other side of Marsh and Alistair again.
