I love this series and this book did not disappoint. It started out more than a bit slow, as it did take us a while to find out what exactly the mystery was, but it was fun to reunite with characters from O Jerusalem. Something is wrong with the succession at Justice Hall. The current Duke longs to return to his nomadic life, but is bound by duty, while a killer lurks in the wings. I love Mary Russell who is both smart and strong. The addition of Iris to this novel, made it all the better for readers who enjoy strong female characters.

I purchased the audiobook from Audible. The unabridged recording was approximately 16 hours and 28 minutes, and published by Recorded Books. The audiobook is narrated by Jenny Sterling who does a superb job giving voice to the characters in this novel. The audiobook brought so much more life to the book than when I read it the first time, and I would definitely vote for giving this one a go on audio.

An enjoyable reading experience.

This was my favorite so far, mostly due to the characters. Much better than "The Moor" because it was an original tale, and some of the Characters from "O' Jerusalem" were already established. I hope that the character Iris comes back in another tale.

Strong character development: Yes

Another Stunner by Ms. King, she always keeps me hooked. Believable, Russell is the natural evolution for Holmes from Watson.

One of my favourites of the series. Timely given Remembrance Day is just around the corner. Discussion on honour and duty and justice. Learned a lot of history and culture of this time more so than in other books.

Really great character development in this one. I like that each book in this series feels really different. Once again some problematic bits around race that are easy to pass off as historically accurate, but are still troubling.

I loved this one. It may just be my favourite so far. Russell and Holmes have only just returned from Dartmoor only to be summoned immediately to help an old friend help another old friend with regards to a dukedom. I was so pleased to see these two characters again and even enjoyed learning them anew in this environment. The house and its inhabitants come alive in the way it feels like you’re reading a country house murder when that’s not what this is. The additions dealing with the war and “desertion” was also quite poignant and sad and was well handled. Bravo!
