Mary and Homes have come to Justice Hall to help their old friends from O Jeruselem, Ali and Mahmoud. The story invovles multiple heirs, a potential murder and the true story behind one soldier's death. Started off very slowly but soon came to a satisfying end. Great plot with the young soldier; it almost made me cry.

My favorite in the series so far, especially the heartbreaking understory of the young soldier, Gabriel, in WWI and the conclusion of his story with the help of his uncles Marsh and Alistair.
The reuse of my favorite characters from O Jerusalem made this book an instant success. The reader is dropped into the trenches of WWI through the eyes of a young soldier who meets with a tragic end and is pulled into the intrigue of a family with a long political history and a twisted bloodline.
I really enjoyed this sixth book in the Mary Russell series. This is easily one of my favorites in the series. I loved the settings: the old English estate complete with secret passageways, ancient artifacts, and sprawling landscapes; WWI France, and even Canada. The plot really drew me in and the mystery was really quite good with lots of twists and turns.
Beloved characters from O Jerusalem are at the heart of this novel so I recommend reading O Jerusalem first in order to truly appreciate this book. There is also the addition of a dead soldier Gabriel whose writings will stay with the reader just as they did with Mary. He is the epitome of the tragic hero.
The audiobook version that I listened to was superb! The narrator did a fantastic job of giving voice to all the different characters.

An excellent sequel-within-a-series to O Jerusalem, this book was a quick-paced and thoughtful whodunnit with posh stakes and an affectionate shoutout to Canada. Every Canadian likes a pat on the head from popular media now and again. We can’t help it.
I really want to commend the narrator of this series, Jenny Sterlin, who is truly an artist of the craft. Big fan of this versatile voice!

I love this series but I just didn't care for this one at all.
This book gets full marks for its disguises, characters, plot twists, believable-yet-imaginative ending, and setting. It is one of my favorites of the series thus far.
