I loved the first two books in the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder trilogy. I was convinced Holly Jackson must’ve had a ghost writer write that terrible 3rd book of that trilogy but after reading this, I’m beginning to wonder if Holly Jackson just had an amazing editor for those first two books?
First of all, the title alone tells you to never worry that more than one person will die and while I wholeheartedly am happy it was Oliver who died I actually hoped the title had been called Four Survive and Red died too. I mean I get the guilt and trauma but for the love of god I don’t need to hear every passive and annoyingly pathetic thought in Red’s head. Also! No way would the family of a police captain killed on the job, not have enough money for food, clothing and heating. The pension alone would’ve been enough and if somehow it wasn’t, the Union would’ve never allowed that and stepped in with assistance.
This book was frustrating on so many levels. Why would anyone listen to Oliver and why oh why would someone date him for 2 years?? I actually wish Red had been the one who died and Oliver lived only because I wish Oliver would’ve had to go to jail for everything he did! Death was an easy way out.
Why would Red’s best friend’s mom pull her into this mafia vendetta? There was no real backstory for it. It was obvious Red was the secret eyewitness from the start but the whole getting paid to lie part didn’t make sense either. Especially since in her fake testimony she didn’t actually see him kill the guy! She “heard gun shots and saw him walking out of the shipyard but never saw the body and only told police after a few days when it was reported a murder had happened”. No, that’s not the same as seeing him pull the trigger to the guy’s head, which is what Lavoy was basically telling the press.
The other characters were forgettable and the ending was terrible. Leaving it on a romantic cliffhanger between a pathetic, guilt ridden character and the son of the mob boss who’s now killed out of revenge for her? Really?
Lastly, I don’t remember finding out the significance of the curtains? Did Red ever figure it out?

Five survive follows a group of six friends who are travelling in an RV cross country for their spring break. About halfway to thier destination the rv breaks down and they quickly realise it wasn't just an accident. Someone is in the woods, with a sniper and has shot out all four tyres. The shooter tells the group that they can get out of this alive if they just give up their secret. Of course, between the six of them, there are a lot of secrets.
I really wanted to like this because I love the good girls guide to murder trilogy but I didn't really get on with it unfortunately. It wasn't bad - the plot and pacing were great and it was a really tense read. I just didn't connect to any of the characters at all, the only one I liked was Red. I feel like this would have made a really good film but I'm not sure the format was suited to a book.
