A gaggle of different people/personalities gather together to help a girl in their apartment complex who is neglect by her strung out mom. Beautiful development of characters and relationships.

Absolutely loved this book.

Sometimes a child knows better. Which is the exact case when it comes to Don't Let Me Go. In it, you will meet 10 year old Grace who is completely adorable and mostly alone in this world. Yes, she has mom and lives with her. Unfortunately, her mom enjoys getting high, or "loaded" if you ask Grace, instead of playing mom. This leads Grace to adventure out past her apartment and she gets to know the people who live around her.

Here's the double whammy - they are all alone in some way. Yet, these band of misfits somehow find a common ground: Grace. She weaves her way into their hearts and they all start caring for one another. I loved when they stood up for her in front of her own mom. It broke my heart how she treated her and always just went to drugs instead.

That being said, this book did a great job showing what addiction looks like. It doesn't just hurt one person whether it's a family member or not. I also liked how her mom had a sponsor.. but she didn't really do anything until the end of the book. Yes, she was on Grace's side but she seemed to let her mom's drug habit slide way too far.

In the end, I adored this book and everyone involved. Well, not the mom but maybe in time I could learn to like her.

I really enjoyed this book- it was a great chapter story that had me cheering for the characters and feeling like I was glimpsing something real. I kinda wish I could read it again without knowing the ending because it was fitting but not obvious and I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Read it- free on amazon as an ebook means you have no excuse not to.

Well, I certainly wasn't expecting such a wonderful read, even if it was a heart tugger and my eyes leaked.
Beautifully, yet simplistically written, this story is told from two points of view. One, a little girl named Grace, who's mother is an addict, and the second, a man named Billy, who hasn't left his apartment in 12 years.
The story centers on the neighbours in Grace's building stepping up to take care of her when her mother, due to her addiction, cannot. Catherine Ryan Hyde has created a wonderful group of characters that are each very distinct but authentic to their part in the story. I had a hard time dealing with Grace's mother, who was a whiney, self-centered speck on this planet, but even with this character, Hyde realistically details the egocentric personality of the addict, and how long and how hard the process is to get out of oneself and back into the world and the people around them.
This is a delightful story that deals with some very real hard topics; addiction, agoraphobia, loneliness, fear of other people, community, belonging, friendship and love.

Definitely well worth your time.

I have a new favorite author! Love that I didn't find her until after she apparently has already published more than 24 novels. My quick glance through Amazon shows that most of them are 4 stars or more. Excited to read more.

Totally unexpected find in this book. LOVED little Grace & rooted for her the entire way! Could totally see this as a movie- really loved all the characters, even the mom whom I hated the entire book just about.

3.5 stars.

Overall, I enjoyed the book, but there were a few little things that kind of bugged me throughout. One was Grace. She was a bit repetitive at times and seemed to vacillate between sounding like a regular 9-year-old and sounding like someone older. I also was a bit disappointed that we didn't get to see the development of Jesse and Rayleen's relationship, which made it a little hard to make sense of their ending. It seemed like it moved a bit fast in the three months that went by between their meeting and Grace's dance.

I would say the standout character for me was Billy. Pretty well-developed, and you can't help but root for him.
