The way this story highlights the circle of violence that exists in our world.. I will be thinking about this book and it’s last lines for a long time.

And the Ocean Was Our Sky is a really interesting twist on Moby Dick. The idea that there is a single source of evil that gathers more power the more harm, anguish, and death it creates is something that's explored in a lot of fantasy settings from Lord of the Rings to table top role play games, but I've never seen it done this way. Bathsheba's insistence on being the dissenter against the common beliefs of her community is an interesting inversion of YA tropes where the dissenter is proven right in the end. Demetrius and Bathsheba's interactions caused a fundamental fissure in her core beliefs about the natures of men and whales. It pushes her to questions whether fighting for the sake of tradition is fighting the monsters or turning themselves into monsters. I think the way this book deals with questioning sense of self and the idea of loyalty to tradition and rank will make it a modern classic.
I didn't love this book in the way I normally do to give a five star rating, but it was beautifully and lovingly crafted and the questions it poses are going to stick with me for quite a while.

this story is something else.
it’s strange and so different and at the same time speaks so many truths.
i liked and hated how the whales are humanities in this book. how the use our kinds of weapons, ships and live in cities and work, instead of having a more animalistic version of those things - BUT it does make this story appeal to more readers i would guess.
it makes it easier to see people in the whales and connect to the story.
i do love how this story ends, how it discovered and unveils this devil and shows what a real devil is. that’s just how i enjoy this type of story.
but it’s pretty brutal.
both in picture and storytelling.
there is a lot of death, murder and killing. there is torture and brutality…
it’s not a nice little story.
but i think it works very well and i enjoyed it a lot more than i expected both the first time i read it and even more so on the reread.
it’s something different but well told.
