Part historical fiction, part swashbuckling adventure, there's a pretty good story here that keeps you guessing for awhile. However, the narrative frequently gets lost in run-on sentences. I enjoyed the title character, who we see from the perspective of his young teenage ward, although we don't really learn much about the boy. Life in 17th century Madrid, along with its politics, religion, and culture, is vividly and believably described. The ending leads to a sequel, but I'm not sure I'm interested enough to follow the captain further.

Read it for school. Not gonna lie, I didn't have high hopes but it was pretty good. Alatriste?? Mi novio.

17th century tale involving sword for hire, Captain Alatriste. He agrees to a job involving British travelers. When the job falls apart, the Captain is on the run and in a little bit of trouble. A decent first novel in this series. Reminds me, for some reason, of the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns where the lead character is a good guy at heart who kills when it's necessary.

Ten years later: I’ve read this book again for some reason. It remains the same.

The perfect thing to get me through a sickday. A very simple story padded by interesting commentary on Inquisition-era Spain, and in particular the city of Madrid. Written with elegant, careful prose that's a cut above the usual historical-mystery fare. Worth the couple of hours it takes to read.

Hit and miss, interesting at times but boring sometimes as well. Don't think I will look out for any more in this series.

An interesting book with extremely eloquent descriptions and poems interspersed in the writing. I wonder how it reads in Spanish because some of the phrases would probably be even more impressive.
