The white feminism was strooong, which made this much less enjoyable than it could’ve been. The premise was sweet, though—I would love to see some sort of rewrite. (I haven’t seen the movie yet, and maybe they’ll have approached some things differently, but I’m not getting my hopes up.) I wanna try some of the recipes in the back!

A beautiful story about the immense power of love, friendship, and sharing stories. I loved the relationship between Evelyn and Ninny - the two develop a love and respect for one another that saves both of them and gives them fuller lives. Ninny’s stories about life in Whistle Stop during her youth and young adulthood are at times difficult and heartbreaking, but they exemplify the importance of family and community. There are definitely aspects of the book that are a bit dated but considering the book is nearly 40 years old (and is set at times 40-60 years before that), it’s understandable. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this book going into it but I’m so glad I read it.
