I almost noped out of this book at 10 minutes, but managed to make it to 40m before giving up. It's so terribly written, where Allie's only character trait is that she likes, and I quote, "Japanese stuff" so she immediately gets obsessed when she meets a real life Japanese girl!!1! It's extremely fetishy and weird. While there are real teenagers like this, it's not a good thing and we shouldn't be writing and reading books about them.
Lance is almost worse, his only character trait is he likes showtunes (how stereotypical did you want to write your gay characters??), and he hums them all the time regardless of the situation. He also doesn't believe bi people exist, says they're "bi now, gay later", and doesn't get why Sergio doesn't feel like he can come out as fully gay. It was just far far too much biphobia for me to be comfortable reading, and even if he changes and grows as the book goes on there's no way I'm wading through that.
The characters are one dimensional, the writing is childish, and the ideas and themes of the book are awful. Absolutely do not recommend anyone reads this.

Honestly, I expected more from this book. I also didn't expect that a LOVE INTEREST would be biphobic. I liked Allie & Kimiko's relationship more than Sergio & Lance. I would've been perfectly fine just reading about Allie & Kimiko's relationship. I have read better books with queer representation.

I got about 40 percent through this book before I DNF’d it. And I hate DNFing books. It started off rocky but I hoped it would get better. But between Sergio’s issues with Lance being a virgin and Lance’s blatant bi-phobia (he doesn’t believe bi people exist). I was struggling. I tried to hold on for the f/f couple but I just couldn’t go on. The summary gave me a false hope for this book. It sounded like it would be fun and kinda cheesy, instead the dialogue is very stingy and cringe-worthy.lanawils's review against another edition

24 pages in, this book is rough and not in a good way. I’m probably not going to finish this and I wish I thought it was worth giving to someone else.
It’s mostly dialogue. Sometimes it doesn’t even say who is talking. It flips between 4 characters and it really doesn’t tell you the perspective changed. On top of that, biphobia and lots of stereotypes.
The characters all talk like they’re reading a script for a play. There’s no feeling, personality, or vernacular in the dialogue. It feels more like a choppy school skit to talk about LGBT things.
A little bit in defense of the book, it was published in 2011. Maybe things have changed to much for me to feel good reading all these blatant gross stereotypes and fetishizing cultures
Also, there are things that contextually don’t make sense. There is a sentence, on page 20, that’s says ”he bent over again to kiss her again.” and yet neither of these things had been mentioned before.
