Gaiman continues to revel in his ability to put the magic, mysterious, and horrifying in the commonplace and mundane. My favorite stories were "October in the Chair" in which months of the year tell a touching coming of age story, "Chivalry" (a new twist on the Grail myth featuring an old woman and her antique collection), "How To Talk to Girls at Parties" (I didn't learn how to do that), and "Sunbird" ( a unique Phoenix myth with food porn). There's also an excerpt from his Newberry Award winning novel Graveyard Book which whetted my appetite for more magical adventures in that world. And the final poem has some of the best advice a young person can receive.

Was a little disappointed in this one since many of the stories I had already read from other compilations. Did enjoy the nursery rhyme land murder mystery though

If you're a fan if short stories, believe me this is perfect, there is such a vast array of narratives, genres, and brilliant characters, if you're unsure about what you wanna read this is great to just enjoy and read casually. However, I would say that "How to Sell Ponti Bridge" was the only one that I didn't really enjoy that much, but believe me the good ones are Troll Bridge, Chivalry, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, and Sunbird, all worth a read!

I always enjoy anything by Neil Gaiman, but noticed some repeat short stories that I read either in Smoke and Mirrors or Fragile Things.

As with most short story collections, there were stories I loved and stories I liked less, but they were all Neil, so I liked them all.

Good collection of short stories. They were very well written. As expected from Gaiman :)

Actual rating 3.5

My attention was wandering. I either read this actual book before, or just enough of the stories within it that I wasn't really interested.

Tough to rank this one because it is a selection of short stories, of which all but a few are quite good. Started to read it because a lot of my kids like him, and I'm glad I did unlike Hunger GamesN which was a waste of my time. Definitely read some Gaiman if you have not. He is a master of his craft, and has a lot to say. His greatest skill is writing from different voices; it is almost as if he had lived multiple lives which he informing us about. How he knows so much about the inner life of an English widowed pensioner, ill never know. Definitely plan to read more.

I loved most of the stories, but a few of the longer ones were also in other Gaiman short story volumes, which was kind of disappointing. Shouldn't it be all new stories?
