My second James McBride novel – he writes great stories with insanely inventive plots and interesting characters, but I always feel like there's just a littttleeeeee something missing and I can never put my finger on it. However he is the king of the ensemble cast (which I love) and this story was moving as hell so I would still recommend.

I love stories about real people. This book had some unexpected twists with some characters I had first considered to be in the background. All of the different stories melded  really well in yo each other and kept me waiting for the next connection.
