“Thank you, Monkey Pants.” 

The first novel in quite a while that challenged me, educated me, while also bringing me to tears - both through its raw emotion and its hilarity. This will stick with me for a while.

An ambitious attempt for a multicharacter study that could not complete its delivery. Characters' interactions that are implied between chapters hold intrigue yet do not always provide enough spark between them. If more time was given for these characters, then there would be a better impression left.

James McBride is an author I can neither predict nor ignore.  The writing is glorious and his characters are visceral. The plot contains many heavy topics; however, under them all is the strength of a community.
