An interesting read, using backstory to move the personal and professional relationships of the two leads forward. Complex characters and solidly researched historical settings. PLUS, this:

" “You know Chinese, too?” Tobias asked.
 “Cantonese,” Riot corrected. "

THAT was swoonworthy! The ignorant insistence that the different (many mutually unintelligible) members of the Sinitic language family are "dialects" is wrongheaded and one of my major bêtes noires. So kudos to Ms Flynn for this.

A well-written historical mystery that finally fills in a lot of the missing background to Atticus Riot. Additionally, there's a lot of great stuff about what San Francisco was like in 1900. I really love all the historical research that goes into these books, and I appreciate that the author puts in an afterwards and a bibliography, because I love having the chance to follow up on the real life history.

The actual framework of the outer mystery in the book was a little convoluted for how simple it wound up being, but there was so much else going on that I'm willing to forgive it. (The mystery itself was more like 3 stars, the rest of the book makes it 4.)

This one gets into Ravenwood and Atticus Riot's past with flashbacks and we find out more about the death of Zephaniah  Ravenwood. The background is a mystery revolving around a series of slave girls murders, sex trafficking and the underground of 1900's San Francisco. The best about this series is the characters.

1900 San Francisco. Edward Sinclair is convinced he has killed a man but the body has gone missing. Isobel Kingston decides to investigate but trouble comes to her. While Atticus Riot searches for Isobel, he is hounded by the voice of his dead partner, Zephaniah Ravenwood. Dead now four years, can he discover the truth of the death.
An entertaining and well-written historical mystery

*TW for sex trafficking & abuse

A dark, gritty mystery. The author didn’t shy away from the ugliness that could be found in America for non-white, non-male people at the turn of the 20th century. She also did her due diligence in terms of how a multitude of POC were treated, & made sure that her MCs engaged with those issues thoughtfully. A rare thing, tbh. I also loved AJ & Isobel’s blossoming relationship. A gritty, well-written story.
