I don’t know what I just read all I know is that I thought we left the “not like other girls” trend behind in 2012 and that I’ve never read a forest survival story where the main character cut off her foot in a meth lab

This book did not fuck around for one second. Ashley was a brutal character that goes through brutal shit and I was a drawn in immediately. I wasn’t as in love with this novel as I was The Female of the Species, but it was still a damn good read. Definitely going to keep picking up her books.

An interesting premise, seemingly inspired by Hatchet, but definitely for older teens. It was poetic, playing with time and memory in ways that helped develop the character over time. The ending was satisfying while still matching the overall tone of the book.

I may not agree with all the directions her stories take, but Mindy McGinnis knows how to hook you. The girl-hate is not optimal, but I feel like it’s part of her development. I would like one of McGinnis’s love interests to survive to the end of a book, though. Rights for Davey Beet.
