What a visceral, gruesome experience. And I say “experience” because that’s absolutely what this book is. I’d never imagined trying to survive the woods in this detail, and now it feels like I went through it with Ashley.
Apparently even when I’m a drunk crazy woman I don’t leave a trail.
Big, big cw for this book for gore, descriptions of pain, drugs, etc. because it’s not for the faint of heart. You’re dragged along with Ashley on this intense ride of survival, for better and (mostly) for worse. So many small details were divulged in this that really fleshed out the intricate developments that happen in this situation.
I really enjoyed this book’s style; it almost felt like I was reading Ashley’s memoir of what happened. Weaving her past into the pressing present of the forest. Harboring quiet, individualized revelations and realizations in the echoing quiet of the trees.
The ending was both a relief and a heartache, because going through something like this would change anyone. I know I’ll be keeping Ash’s journey in my mind for a good, long while.

This is a quick and fast paced read. Ashley’s wilderness experience helps her through her time lost. I understand wanting to find the campsite, however, the entire time I kept yelling at her to stay where she was until she was too far gone. It is a good YA survival story. I’m looking forward to reading more fun this author.

Brutal survival story that is believable. It's got gross gory stuff, so if reading about things like that (surviving off of bugs, dealing with broken limbs, etc) then be warned because this book doesn't hold back on that.
At first this book was a 2 star, I couldn't stand the MC or her friends, but as the story went on I was pulled in to the survival aspect and I was anxious to know how it would end.

Somehow this book was a rollercoaster and I really enjoyed it. There are some gruesome scenes, quite vivid and strong, but really enjoyed reading it.

Ashley liebt die Natur und das Wandern. Mit ihren Freund:innen macht sie sich deshalb auf zu einer Party mitten im Wald. Leider läuft alles etwas anders als geplant und Ashley wacht am nächsten Morgen allein in der Natur auf. Niemand ist mehr in der Nähe, der Rest denkt, sie sei allein nach Hause zurückgekehrt. Das wäre kein so großes Problem, wenn Ashley sich nicht in tiefster betrunkener Wut den Fuß so stark verletzt hätte, dass sie nun ihren Knochen sehen kann.
Ab da geht es steil bergab. Ashley hat keinerlei Verpflegung oder erste Hilfe Kasten bei sich, dafür, so als Sahnehäubchen, ihre Periode. Es ist bewundernswert mit was für einer Verbissenheit und Kreativität, mit was für einem sturen Überlebenswillen, sie sich trotzdem daran macht, den Wald allein zu verlassen. Was folgt ist eine Mischung aus der Schilderung knallharter Extremsituationen und Ashleys Gedanken zurück an ihr normales Leben. Sie denkt an ihre Freundinnen, ihren ersten Schwarm und ihre aktuelle Beziehung; an das Leben mit ihrem Vater im Wohnwagen und wie es ist, von der eigenen Mutter zurückgelassen zu werden; an ihr Lauf-Stipendium, das ihre einzige Möglichkeit, aufs College zu gehen, darstellt. Richtig gelesen, Ashley ist Läuferin, was die Verletzung an ihrem Fuß ins Tragische steigert. So erfahren wir Stück für Stück mehr über die Protagonistin und fiebern irgendwann nicht mehr nur aus Mitleid sondern aus purer Sympathie mit ihr mit.
Als Erlebnis kann ich das Hörbuch nur empfehlen, weil es die Verzweiflung und lähmende Gewaltigkeit von Ashleys Situation noch weiter intensiviert. Aber egal in welchem Medium, Be Not Far From Me ist ein fesselnder Überlebenskampf, der nie die Schönheit der Natur aus den Augen verliert und daraus Minute um lebensbedrohliche Minute neue Kraft und Hoffnung schöpft.
