I don't even remember when was the last time I was so mad at a book as at the end of Edith's chapter. Like throwing-the-book-across-the-room-mad. But of course you can't throw around these e-readers, which left me quite frustrated. Great book :P

The main character is supposed to be a very, but I just don't like books where the main character is a jerk. No one to root for. I'm also not generally a fan of time and narrator jump, but also it was really well written and dark. Yellowface and this book have many similarities.

Hard to read at times, but only because Boyne is so good at writing flawed characters in compromising situations. There is a strange unease lurking beneath much of this book, but it is compelling and I’m glad I persevered. Probably closer to 3.5 stars, but I read through the latter half so quickly I bumped it up to 4.
