Give me any kind of time travel, time loop, going back to fix wrongs and I’m all there. I really like how she used music as the way to go back in time. How fun it would be to see yourself as a teenager when you’re an adult.

If I were to review this book with one word it would be Nostalgic. To be able to go back and see your high school self navigate romantic relationships and life in general seems so surreal—which is what Sam experiences when she has to return to her hometown and runs into her high school crush, Damon. The plot was such a unique way to introduce a second chance romance. It led me down my own rabbit hole of memories and I am grateful that this book brought all those memories flooding back.

Given such a unique gift to be able to go back in time and right wrongs and learn and grow. This was actually really beautiful.

What a thoroughly fun read!

It’s a thought we’ve all had - if I had just done this one thing differently, how would my life have turned out? Well, what if you had a magical CD player and a thirteen-track mix tape to show you?

If you are at all familiar with the indie/emo music scene of the mid-00s, I think you’ll find this book enjoyable based on that alone. BUT the book doesn’t solely rely on this cutesy plot device - there is some real depth to the story, and it delves into intergenerational dynamics, mental health, and abandonment. I found most of the side characters to be enjoyable. Sam and Damon are good together, even if she is a bit hard to take at first. (Someone who has spent so long running from her problems is bound to have some stuff to work through.) Not to spoil anything, but I especially loved how things turned out with mixtape, the idea that things work out as they are meant to.

There are laughs. There’s angst. There’s a great soundtrack. This was a great light read, and I look forward to reading more from the author.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

A story about what if. I myself have thought about writing a booking about this exact topic. But Erin La Rosa did this in an interesting way, through an old CD-Walkman. Ever wonder if you made the right choices in your life. Whether it was if you went to the right college, or didn’t kiss that boy - best friend of yours that you eventually started to crush on, all because you didn’t want to be stuck. We have all thought of if we had made a different decision would our lives turned out much different, would our lives been better or worse. La Rosa did this question justice, as Sam was able to see through a CD, that cause her to see an alternate universe, that her best friend Damon gave her their senior year of high school on the day he asked to kiss her and she chose to say she didn’t feel well. She did this all because she didn’t want to get stuck in Tybee, her home town. She wanted to go to flight school and see the world; her mother who abandoned her always told her “Don’t get stuck in this place”, which she later finds out meant something else entirely. This book brings you through all the feels. The Backtrack takes same through her life is she would have done the opposite of her current life choices, but would she interpreted what all the visions mean for her and Damon for the good, or will she still feel stuck as to what is the best thing to do.

Thank you Net Galley and Harlequin Trade Publishing - Canary Street Press for this ARC for my honest review.
