One Two Three

This is the story of three sisters, triplets, living a small town in the US.
They are triplets, hence the numbers in the title. One - Mab, the "normal" one. Two - Monday, on the autistic spectrum. Three - Mirabel, affected by cerebral palsy.
Their small town has suffered the effects of an unknown pollutant from a big company that came into town and then left everybody behind suffering on different levels, emotional, health and economic wise.

It is a heartbreaking and heartwarming story, told through the voices of each of the three sisters.
It's about family, community, friendship, coming of age, resilience and choices.
Each character is more or less flawed, but they are all human.
There's are also a few big conclusion that can be drawn from this, but they are not in your face or preachy. They are subtle, and it's up to the reader to see them and feel them if the wish, and that's one of the reasons this is a 5 star and a new favorite for me.

It took me a few chapters to get into the book and I was a little worried the pace would be too slow for me. But once it clicked and I got sucked in, I couldn't put it down. The thoughtfulness of the characters was amazing and they were really well developed. This was the first book I've read that had 3 point of views and it was so interesting to get the different perspectives. I think most of us can relate to being 16 and having to just navigate teenage life and I appreciated that even though these young women had to face adult challenges early on, there were still sparks of youth and giggles.

The side characters were just as enjoyable as the main ones, Pastor Jeff, Tom, Pooh, for starters added so much to the story.

Slow at times (isn’t that all literary fiction?!) but a really captivating story. Loved all three sisters. Loved the AAC/disability/neurodiversity rep. Loved the side characters. Really made me think! Totally worth the read. Heard the audio is fabulous and got FOMO that I read it with my eyes instead!

This story was unlike anything I've ever read before and it's the kind of book that will stick with you long after you read it. I adored each of the three sisters' and loved how it was told all in their point of view. However, this book was really hard for me to get through. I found it to move incredibly slow and the narration was hard to follow at times (I found myself constantly re-reading things). With that in mind, I highly recommend the audiobook--it really came to life to hear each POV and just overall made it a lot easier for me to read. Nonetheless, I feel that the story and concept alone is still worth the read and think it warrants a great discussion!!
