This was SO CLOSE to being a full 5, but there was a small section in the middle that seemed to drag on. I don't normally enjoy the enemies to lovers trope but I actually really enjoyed the mean girls premise. Like Clay was SO MEAN. Some of the things she did to Olivia, don't know how she could of got past that. The chemistry was there, though, and I routed for them in the end. The Jaeger family is so fun, they reminded me of a mix between the Shameless family and the On the Block crowd. Like Oscar Diaz is the perfect Macon in my opinion and I would love to see a book written about him, or any of the other Jaeger brothers!

I was excited to read a wlw novel and had heard great things about this one. After finishing this book, though, I can say for certain that I really didn’t enjoy it for a variety of reasons. 1) I rarely like the enemies to lovers trope but I especially hate the bullies to lovers trope. How can someone be so beyond horrible to another person yet also like them. And even more, how does the bullying victim like them back after all they’ve put them through?! I don’t understand it. 2) I absolutely LOATHE the harmful trope that violent homophobes are secretly gay. Internalized homophobia isn’t an excuse to be horrible to other people. 3) I didn’t like the bits of fat phobia and negativity around food and bodies sprinkled throughout. While this book didn’t focus on eating disorders, there was enough of a disordered eating undertone that was bothersome.

Some small qualms include 1) I don’t understand why, in so many wlw novels, one of the female leads always has a masculine name. While I know that’s not inherently a problem, I feel like it always reinforces a binary in relationships. 2) quite a few side characters had odd names that I didn’t know how to pronounce. This could just be my fault but I names like Krisjen and Macon bothered me the entire time. 3) I feel like this book could’ve been 100 pages shorter and it would’ve been much better, though I don’t know if that would really change my overall opinion of the story.

Overall, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone and I easily could’ve gone without reading it, but I did finish it.

In the beginning I had to push myself to continue reading (due to the occasional use of slurs), but after that it was, mostly, smooth sailing. I did feel like it lacked exposition towards the end with the amount of time-skips in between major plot points.
