This comic came to a beautiful end. It was emotional, touching, if you don't cry or feel the emotions at least one you definitely don't have a heart

The arc provided by Netgalley for exchange of honest review.

... there's nothing you can do for your friends. All you can do is still be their friend.

Honestly, so much happened in this book. It dive deepen into the history of their friendship, why Asari held grudge against three of her best friends, and so much more. Also, I could saw Yuushin character development through this book. Their friendship is just... amazing. This volume is what I've expected to read and so much more.

3.8/5 stars!

While I did enjoy the story I still had the same issue as last time in that the bullying wasn't taken seriously enough for me.
SpoilerSora has gotten beaten up on a constant basis and Tsugu is caught up in wanting them to be like they used to and doesn't focus on it at all.
The thing is Yuushin obviously feels shame and hatred towards himself, but taking it out on other people is not okay. And we see him learn throughout, but for me the situation wasn't resolved enough for him to be absolved of his wrong doings. Another review just reminded me of something I forgot about but spoiler for Vol2. Yuushin never acknowledged what he did to Asari
Spoilersexual assault at kareoke
so... yeah still trash, like this book even less now.

But I do think its important to have this story because as much as I don't like the choices some characters made, it showcases the different ways bullying can appear and the effects it can have. It could come from someone you formerly called a friend. It is done out of internal turmoil and shame and insecurity. And it's not always a black and white situation which makes it more difficult.

At the end of this volume there was a short story that I really don't know how to feel about only that it makes me uncomfortable. Spoilers for the story: It starts off in this place that resembles heaven and souls are getting to pick where they'd like to be born. Fun concept. One picks out this 17yo girl who is 'troubled'. He ends up enjoying his time as her son, but at a turning point we her struggling and one day she doesn't come home. And then we see the spirit back in the heaven place, indicating that he passed away. We see online comments harassing the mom and the spirit saying that they don't want that for her since she gave him a good life. And then the story continues as the spirit finds new ways of coming back and being in her life as a kitten, a flower and a raindrop. It's interesting because again it doesn't take the view most people would and demonize the mom. It instead sympathizes with her, which is the part that makes me uncomfortable. Because it is undeniable that she went through some rough times and must have been struggling a lot to succumb to that, but it is also the fate of the child is mortifying and preventable. And not fully exploring the gravity of that situation is not good imo.

okay, this last volume felt a bit rushed... i feel like the characters could have gone through a bigger development: yeah they changed, but not THAT much.
i'm a bit disappointed by this serie to be honest, i was expecting something more emotional and moving.

i liked the short story at the end, even if it was a bit strange.

I was really disappointed by this series. The characters outside of Sora didn't get much growth that felt sincere and not rushed. Tsugu finally drops the mask and reveals her true feelings about her loneliness, aversion to change, and her parents' divorce, but it just gets brushed aside. Yuushin gets shoehorned redemption as well (ain't no way I'm cheesing with someone who drove me to the point of suicide; we can be cordial, but that's it!).

Perhaps, a lot of the pacing and flat development issues are due to the length of the story. But as it is, The Golden Sheep is beautiful to look at and easy to consume but very shallow.

Also, no thank you to the “let men cheat. don’t break up a happy home” propaganda. The story really tried to slide in that Yuushin’s mom was strong for staying with a man who
groomed a high schooler.

Really liked that Sora’s future changed.
yeah, he was good at manga, but he decided to pursue cooking instead.

The oneshot included at the end was depressing and strange. I’ll say it’s refreshing to initially see grace given to a teen mother, but for this situation, it seemed really inappropriate. And a bit like Stockholm syndrome.

**a hot mess of a read now that i’m sitting on it. the ending was way too rushed with those bullshit make-ups.

i was going to give it a higher rating tbh because i was distracted by the pretty art style and pretty quotes but reading others reviews really put things into perspective for me. two big issues.

1) tsugu pushing sora to be friends with yuushin again.

2) brushing asari’s assault by yuushin under the rug.

if i was sora, yuushin would never ever hear from me again. if i was asari, yuushin would never ever hear from me again. yuushin honestly is past the point of no return, at the very least, in the context of those friendships. i am at the point of severe lifelong depression and mental and physical issues, all because of my childhood bullies, and i honestly don’t think i could ever forgive or be around them again. so i know what the fuck i’m saying when that shit is unforgivable.

sora and yuushin said that bullshit thing about not forgiving each other, but in the end they were friends again and hung out. screw that.

yuushin had his issues but they were no excuse to physically and violently torment sora to the point of him attempting to commit. there is never an excuse for that.

i would never ever hang around my assaulter i.e. asari and yuushin. it doesn’t matter how far they did or didn’t go. they had the intent. that’s enough.

also, i hated that he found/kept another animal as if that’s his “redeeming quality”… when he was throwing rocks at the dog they originally found together.

the story at the end had some pretty quotes, but it’s fucking weird to humanize a woman like that. she is way. way. way past forgiveness as well.

it was a nice quick series to pass the time, and i enjoyed it while i read, but upon reflection i realized how extremely flawed and weird it is.

“there could be a day when we’ll never see each other again. it could be that our paths will split at some point. but even then, i’m sure my flesh and blood and bones will be made of you back when.”

“i’m here with you. in the eyes of a kitten in your hands. in the flowers on the side of the road, in the sweet song playing at the street corner, in the blazing piles of thunderhead clouds in the sky, in the spring breeze that plays with your soft hair. it’s me. they’re all me. i love you.”

overall i’m meh about this. i liked it at first but i feel like it may have subconsciously triggered me and am not processing it yet. i’m a bit bothered. can definitely see how it can trigger those with more prevalent issues and acknowledgement of their past + present traumas.

I received this as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for giving me access.

Wow. This series was surprisingly good. With all the difficult topics that it confronted, the ending was uplifting. Such a great story and perfect ending!

A nice completion to the story. Short bonus story at the end was very dark but very provocative.
