I picked this up randomly with no recommendation hoping it would be a quick, enjoyable historical romance. But the narration was so repetitive, the characters had no depth, and I was so uninvested in the story that it took me a month to read the last twenty pages. I'm not sure what I expected, but maybe this cured me of my weakness for fluff books for a little while.

Felt like a lot of the heavy lifting this book had to do such as introducing everyone and starting the series, hindered the story of Roland and Pearl. Fiona came off grating, Louise was a non-entity and Amanda also needed a therapist and was a bad friend at one point. I'm hoping in her book she develops a bit more.

I thought Pearl was great and loved that she would go and get stuff done.

It felt like there was a lot of conflict. There was too much for me at times. I don't think Roland and Pearl were bad for each other but I felt like Roland needed to have more deep conversations with him and Garrett. Plus, the whole orphan thing Pearl had worried about was never addressed in depth.
