As I read this book, all I kept thinking was that working in government sounds very much as Leslie Knope suggested: that it's a chance to "work hard at work worth doing." Mastromonaco makes working in the White House accessible, but not in that counterproductive way that suggests anyone can do it. She tells a story of uncommonly committed, intelligent, passionate, and resilient people working tirelessly to GSD; she also tells us very human, touching, and often funny stories. I'd recommend this to anyone who'd like to a) hear some stories about Obama being just, ya know, TEH BERST, b) you're about to head off to college, and you're not sure where you're headed in this life (Mastromonaco is all about the keys to being a successful person - no matter where your passion lies!), or c) you love stories about women in leadership being totally boss and helping one another and killing it at their jobs. :)

Final note: Alyssa is the reason the White House now has a tampon dispenser. It didn't for 43 PRIOR ADMINISTRATIONS! It didn't through THE ENTIRE 20th CENTURY! What a fucking hero. **thunderous applause for this badass**

[4.75] This is such a good book for any woman under the age of 25 who has any interest in politics or professionalism (which includes me) but it also made me cry so?? Take that as you will

Great choice to listen to while running. Funny and down-to-earth but motivating as well—like Mindy Kaling for the White House. I'm really glad I picked this one. Read if you're a girls-in-politics junkie like I am.

Got 70% through but DNF. Some of the behind-the-scenes in politics was interesting, but the life/ career advice was heavy handed for my taste and overall structure lacking.

There is something about reading Obama staffer's books that makes me feel better about the world, and this one is no exception. It is more personal than others I have read, and perhaps it is because I relate more to Ms. Mastromonaco, but that is why it is awesome that she wrote this book. She speaks to the need for more female perspectives in government and she is right. It is inspiring to hear about her ups and downs and navigating the path of her career and personal life. She makes it all seem possible and that we can all have a part in it.

I liked it better than Becoming as a memoir about the Obama presidency!
