Sad AF 😭😭😭 I would recommend it because I think it relates to so many other work environments/the jungle vibes, but definitely had a hard time getting past the health details to focus on the logistics and lawsuits sections

Fascinating and upsetting, the story of the radium girls is absolutely horrifying. The amount of bullshit and pain these women were put through is beyond anger inducing. Just a warning for the squeamish: this book is pretty graphic when describing the physical effects the radium had on their bodies. It doesn’t feel gratuitous because it’s important to the story and helping to define the women’s perseverance. But it is fucking intense. I definitely recommend reading this and learning about these incredible women.
A completely absorbing, heartbreaking, thoroughly researched narrative about the women employed as radium dial painters in early 20th century. Moore highlights a few women in particular, following their lives as they were hired on, suffered, and died--but not before working to hold the company to account--with lasting repercussions for workers' rights in the United States and on the use of radioactive materials.

This should be required reading, and force-fed to anyone doubting the importance of worker protections, especially as the protections that evolved from the pain and suffering endured by these women are being stripped away today. Also worth noting - the men who stood by their wives and literally carried them into court for justice.

The audio made me insane! I have listened to many things "on tape" & have never heard the narrator swallowing. IT IS DISGUSTING. Mouth noises are very bothersome to me (sorry not sorry). I found that hearing this detracted from the story slightly because it was so obvious. (1 star deducted for narration choice.)
The story itself is very good. So much research was done! So many people with power took advantage of these workers but it's not that hard to believe. It was surprising that even their own towns turned on them though. The families suffered unimaginably & because we got to know the girls so well we almost suffered along with them through their stories.
I love the fact that it was an 8th grade girl who after reading about the Radium Girls & realizing they were basically unknown, brought their lives to light so as to have a memorial erected in their honor. Now I want to visit it!
