A powerful and heartbreaking nonfiction read about the young women who worked with radium in the early 1900s. Well researched and shows the injustice they faced, which is very upsetting and frustrating to see, especially as a woman.

Wow. As a historically minded person, I am ashamed I had never heard more of this tragic side of history, especially women's history.
Not a light read (or listen) and will take time to work through, but these women's stories deserve to be heard and appreciated for all they have done for modern day society.
Always makes me wonder more about the continued intersectionality of women and health care and the continued oversight today.
Well worth it, but be prepared for a heavy heart

Really questioning my decision to read this one two weeks out from a dentist appointment.

It typically takes a preventable tragedy to happen before action is taken. The issue may be known, but nothing will happen until after a life is lost. That’s just how the system works unfortunately.

“That was the tragedy. Radium had been known to be harmful since 1901. Every death since was unnecessary.”

The case of The Radium Girls will remain in history as one of the most spectacular battles against industrial occupational risks and pure determination and devotion to fight for justice more particularly, as a woman governed by a world dominated by men.

The girls went on living their lives, but
Radium lived covertly disguised with them until it made itself known writhing its victims in complete agony. Those who had survived were also not spared. Accurately depicted in the book as

“a marriage from which there was no divorce.”

Overall, I give it 4.5/5 !!

If it was a bit shorter, I think I would have liked it more.
