eeek i really wanted to like max because of course you want to like the main characters and root for them but it was just not possible with how he treated jack for a huge part of the book — some of the stuff he did and said was just so so cruel and it felt like the few measly apologies that he offered after fell wayyyyyy short of making up for his behavior. jack was lovely and deserves the world. max can f*** off
i was also grossed out by

max’s sexualization of his daughter (when he “teases” his nine year old daughter multiple times about having a “boyfriend” despite her adamantly denying that and seeming to really not appreciate her dad’s “humor” — say it with me y’all, girls and boys can be friends with no romantic feelings involved — ESPECIALLY WHEN SAID GIRLS AND BOYS ARE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL !!
