I received an advanced copy of this book to read and write an honest review. I really enjoyed this book! Just the right amount of intrigue, with some twist. It definitely kept me on my toes. Worth a read!

I received this as an ARC and read it in 2 sittings. The first 1/2 basically sets the tone and develops the characters. The suspense comes in the 2nd half. While I did guess the twist, I wouldn’t say it was entirely predictable. I thoroughly enjoyed #TheSafePlace and would definitely recommend it for an absorbing summer read. Thanks #MinotaurBooks and #AnnaDownes for a great read.

This book reminded me of Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. Especially the opening where she's being driven into the grounds of the French estate.

Much like Rebecca, there are some beautifully written passages. a bland and naive main character and a story that drags along.

This book left me wanting more: more mystery, more twists, more intrigue. Not just a stupid girl who heads off to a remote and isolated estate to do manual labor for strangers and a broken, uber wealthy couple.

Also the characters are English but they often use "Americanisms" such as cookies (later in the book, they are called biscuits), Colgate, acetaminophen, zucchini and eggplant, and the most unlikely "counting Mississippis". This was very distracting especially since the author is English.

*I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and I am required to disclose that in my review in compliance with federal law.*

I received an ARC from Minotaur Books in exchange for an honest review.

This book held my interest well enough. However, it requires suspension of disbelief at multiple plot points in order to be truly enjoyable. The main character’s naivety seemed implausible throughout and downright foolish at one turn late in the story. Additionally, the chapters alternate POVs throughout the book, which has been overdone in my opinion.

This was a very good debut thriller. It was well written and the characters were interesting and believable. The author did a great job of describing the location and details of the house and the grounds. I would have liked to know a little more about both Nina's and Emily's childhoods but not knowing did add to the mystery. And with Scott's high profile job, I did find it a little strange that his wife's absence was not more of an issue. I liked how the chapters alternated between Emily and Scott with Nina's thoughts added in here and there as well. This will make a great vacation or beach read this summer. I look forward to reading more by Anna Downes. I received a ARC of this book from the publisher.

 Interesting, but predictable

I did not see a lot of this book coming, which is always good. A nicely paced read, although some of the middle could have been cut.

Thanks to Netgalley for the read in exchange for an honest review.

Psychological thrillers have gotten so over the top, kitchen sink-y.
