DNF. Was hoping for the wit and insight Sontag is famous for, but I've not been able to get engaged. I got this collection because I couldn't find the more well-known and recommended volumes. Many are out of print.

i read several of the essays in this collection - just picking the ones on themes that interested me - and i enjoyed them. sontag is good at what she does - delivering a sober account of a thing that is well researched. she can be a bit dry, but that doesn't bother me so much - it's nice when someone like DFW can write critically and obviously enjoy himself while doing it - but that isn't necessary. i guess i tend to come away from pieces by sontag feeling like i've learned something, but didn't necessarily enjoy the lesson.

A better example of posthumously published essays, Sontag wanted these ones collected. Sontag writes where her interests take her, but she takes the reader with her. It's a skill, and it served her well.

It has been a long time since I've read such a well written book. If you really love reading and you care a lot about form, structure and the use of argumentation in essays this is definitely a must read. It has pushed my thoughts beyond my current comfortable state of mind.

Excellent literary essays.
Sontag made me interested in subjects I knew absolutely nothing about. The political essays were refreshing to read for the time they were published in, but she contradicts herself at times and that was off-putting.

Her essays on culture/literature are interesting, at times brilliant. The political ones leave much to be desired.
