Nemirovsky proves again why she is a literary genius. "Fire in the blood, how quickly it burns out". The story is insightful, passionate and altogether too short.

I got this book as part of Waterstones "blind date with a book" event for Valentines day, so I had no idea what it was when I bought it. The only hint I had was that it was about "lies and secrets in rural France". This is also the first novel by Némirovsky that I've read, so I really went into this blind.

"Fire in the Blood" is an interesting and beautiful story. Plot wise, it's quite a heartbreaking novel. I enjoyed the parallels between generations;
Spoiler Helene and Francoise's relationship not being as peachy as it seems, their similarities with Colette and Jean. I really enjoyed the twist that Brigitte was Helene and Silvio's child. Those long-kept secrets must have eaten them up, though it's evident that Helene made an effort to forget in order to live a peaceful, rural life.

It didn't feel as though the narrative had much momentum until the last 30 pages or so. But those 30 pages were spectacular and provocative!

A lovely little one-sitting story - fascinating characters. Made me want to move to the French countryside, drink a bottle of wine and read of diaries...

This manuscript was found many years after the author died in Auschwitz. It felt as it if it had not been cleaned up and tuned, which, makes sense. It was a perfectly fine quick read but not something that struck me as especially notable.
