A bookseller recommended this book and it hits my sweet spot for sure! Cozy mystery plus young adult fiction (maybe closer to middle grade since the detectives are 8th graders)? Yes please! This book reminded me a bit of Maureen Johnson, meant as a compliment because I love her!

e: I cant believe I called daisy insufferable I adore her now - but yes she is insufferable too

Daisy is insufferable. I mean, on paper the concept of a narcissistic arrogant little detective girl sounds great but she has no likable qualities at all. I felt sorry for poor Hazel throughout the book!

It's a minor part but I liked how casually there were lesbian relationships in the book. One of the reasons I picked it up in the first place is because I saw reviews complaining about that - Anyone who is so bothered by the inclusion of *minor* lesbian/bi women in a book for children should take a good hard look at themselves.

When I started reading this I was like wow kids books are so dark these days, but then I remembered I grew up with Lemony Snicket

Apparently this was in my to read list for 2 1/2 years before I got it as a present. I know why I didn’t read it - it’s a slightly more awkward chalet school novel with crime - but nevertheless it was a good soft read and I’ll almost certainly come back for more.

A fabulous murder mystery set in a 1930's boarding school - think Agatha Christie the school years. A really good cast and a really nice period feel to the writing. This will probably be popular with adult readers of cosy crime, and I'm planning on lending it to my mother to see if she agrees.
