Read- January 2020
- Oh My Christ! I freaking adored this book. I've been meaning to read this book for a while but just never picked it up and I have no clue why. I figured that I would enjoy this book but I didn't think I would enjoy it this month. However, I think this book is marketed slightly wrong. It's marketed as a middle grade but I just don't think it is, I think it falls between middle grade and YA. It follows slightly younger characters but there's quite a few heavy topics involved so I would say its for younger YA readers. This is my first new favourite of the year.

1st Re-Read- July 2020
- I think it's very obvious how much I love this book/series because I'm already re-reading and it's only been half a year since I first read it. I think this is probably the weakest in the series overall but don't let that put you off reading these books because each one is insanely brilliant. The first time I read this book but main issue was Daisy, I just thought she was so obnoxious and a horrible friend to Hazel but I really didn't notice it as much this time around.

I thought this was adorable and really loved Hazel (and Daisy, but mostly because Hazel loves Daisy!) and the world of Deepdean. I already have the next in the series!

Would totally have DNF’ed if it wasn’t June’s pick for middle grade monthly. I really disliked everything about this book. The story was so ridiculous to me. The setting, an all girls boarding school, is my worst nightmare and those girls were absolutely horrible without ANY consequenties. Keeping the target audience in mind... kids may think this is normal behaviour and therefore the book was terrible problematic to me.

I absolutely loved this book, I can’t say enough about it!
I give this a five stars, I love it!

*4.5

Mini-review:

I thought this was a decent read, I enjoyed the plot and mystery. I did have a big problem with one of the main characters, Daisy. She's a terrible person and I found myself really disliking her. I hope she's better in the next book. Overall, this was a fun mystery! I loved Hazel Wong so much but wished she would stick up for herself more!

Overall: I did really like this book! I definitely save 5 stars for books that absolutely blow me away and leave me in shambles, but, that by no means indicates that the book is bad. I appreciated that the entire book was told through the "side character's" perspective. I thought that was quite refreshing especially seeing how Hazel develops over time and starts to be confident in who she is more.

The way the book was divided into about 4 or 5 sections and then chapters that were a few pages long each was also unique to me and I appreciated that it made the story extremely digestible and faster to read without it feeling rushed/sloppy at the same time.

Other than highlighting those couple of points I don't have much else to say! This is such a feel good, innocent, and classic, mystery novel if you're looking for a delightful little read. I would say compared to other mystery novels the plot in this book is quite linear and that's totally okay :)

4.5 stars

I am trying to give more 4 star reviews to leave room for the books that feel like they've turned me inside-out and changed my life. But - I was just so enchanted by the characters & couldn't put this down. "Bunbreak" is now part of my language.
