“One Dark Window” is a captivating fantasy novel that follows the journey of Elspeth, a young woman harbouring dark magic due to a childhood infection. Alongside the brooding captain of the destriers, who harbours his own secrets about loyalty to the king, Elspeth and a group of trusted allies set out on a quest to collect the Providence cards. These magical cards, when assembled into a deck, hold the power to banish all dark magic from Blunder. However, the nightmare within Elspeth’s mind threatens to disrupt their mission.
The story is enthralling from the start, especially once the concept of the Providence cards is understood. The chemistry between Elspeth and Raven is electric, yet it never overshadows the central focus on Elspeth’s internal struggle with her nightmare. The ending is satisfying, leaving readers eager for the sequel. The Gothic setting is dark and mysterious, perfectly complementing the narrative. The writing is beautifully descriptive, immersing readers fully in the story.
Overall, “One Dark Window” is a brilliant fantasy read with a touch of romance that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end. Elspeth is a likeable protagonist, and the dual rooting for her and the nightmare adds depth to the story. This book is a must-read for fantasy enthusiasts, and I am eagerly anticipating the next instalment.

Good book but not a great book. I enjoyed reading it, I like the characters and the magic system, but it wasn’t something I couldn’t put down or that I would rave to others about.

This was pretty good, it took me a minute to catch on and get into it but i liked the banter with the fmc and mmc, the cards and world were really interesting take on a magical system i hadnt see before. I also love poetry so those lil previews at the beginning of each chapter were fun and helped me learn the cards a little better as i read through. Some people said the poetry made some things too obvious, but i really didnt pick up on that.
The spice was very minimal, but the tension was a really nice addition to the story,, it was fleeting, but afterward had me giggling all the feels lol.
The end was good. I was not expecting that, I mean i was - not exactly, but reading it play out it was well done and has me running for book 2.

i liked the foggy/misty/monster vibes, but it felt like there were too many magical things going on with little explanation ? things also happened to work out perfectly a little too often
