At first, I found this book a struggle. It's very choppy and changey and I found it difficult to keep up but, once I'd got into the rhythm of things- once you learn to cope with the narrations from someone suffering from a mental illness- I tore through it.
The Shock of the Fall is a beautifully written story about coping with the loss of a loved one, made even more heart-breaking by the fact that Matt, the protagonist and narrator, has his own fair share of problems- a mental illness that sees him locked up for the best part of his story. You experience all the lows and highs of the first nineteen years of his life with him and, at times, the honesty of the situations is brutal- I found myself feeling quite sorry for him at times.
Even so, I didn't overly care for Matt, I was more interested in Simon, his deceased brother. The whole story revolves around Matt's feelings and thoughts after the accident and it helps him to deal with his emotions and, hopefully, his problems.

I found this to be a really fascinating read that could also be very difficult in places. This was partly because of the sadness of the story, and partly because of its complexity – the story is told by Matthew, the protagonist, who is suffering from schizophrenia among other mental health problems and his versions of events can be… jumbled.
It’s no great spoiler to know that Matthew’s brother is dead (it’s right there on the blurb!) and this book really looks at the death of Matthew’s brother and the subsequent effect it had on his life.

I want to write a thoughtful and well structured review. The kind that speaks on the subtleties and shared experiences that wind throughout the story. But I can't even cry so there's not much else I can really say and someone else has probably done that already; or else someone else has written the exact opposite and then we'll descend into the endless loop of differing opinions and the rest.
This was the hardest book I have read in a while.

1st book of boutofbooks 13.0! Made me cry. I'm a sucker for books with health issues. This deals with schizophrenia and was written by a nurse!
