A lot of reviews critique the author for writing outside of their experience, but gender identity and queerness are not something quite so visible as racial identity, for example. You might never know the truth of someone’s sexual or gender identity, nor are you entitled to know. James Sie has given young readers a book which examines the struggles and hopes and fears and beauty of queer youth, and for me it struck true. I think this is a great book for high school students who are questioning their sexuality or identity, or have friends or family who are.
