Nie mówię, że książka jest zła.
Zadie Smith zdecydowanie ma talent pisarki i bardzo realistycznie udaje jej się przedstawić poszczególne wydarzenia z życia narratorki tekstu. Jednak wydaje mi się, że przez poruszanie ogromnej liczby tematów (dyskryminacja ciemnoskórych, poszukiwanie własnych korzeni, feminizm, dążenie do kariery politycznej, taniec, problemy biednych krajów afrykańskich, macierzyństwo i wiele innych) książka traci spójność. Niektóre wątki są rozwlekane w nieskończoność, podczas gdy inne, zwłaszcza romantyczne, wprowadzane są jednym zdaniem.
Parę razy zirytowałam się podczas czytania, bo miałam wrażenie jakbym czytała co czwartą stronę.

Przypuszczam, że brak powiązania między różnymi problemami i tematami, których dotyka książka może wynikać z chęci uczynienia jej jak najwierniejszym rzeczywistości przeciętnego człowieka

Życie czasami wydaje się nie mieć sensu i nie pozostawia żadnych jasnych konkluzji, podobnie jak ta książka.

I think it’s unfortunate that this was the first fiction by Zadie Smith I had ever read - she writes well, and sucks you in, but the book felt dated and I lost the alleged throughline of dance quickly. Compelling narrator (compelling in that I disliked and related to her). There are probably better works by her out there

I never had a clue where this was going to end up. It's very good straight fiction. (Straight as in no critters or bizarre plot twists, not a reference to gender. It is a novel about people getting on with their lives.)
