When they finally acted, it was too late - had it ever not been too late?

To say I didn’t know what I was getting myself into would be an understatement. And yet at the end, through all the gore, the pain, the quasi-panic attack I had about 3/4 of the way through the book, I was glad I read this.

That being said, please check the content warnings. And if you have any kind of contamination phobia like I do, meaning bodily fluids and parasites, please don’t read this. I likely wouldn’t have picked this book up if I had known what lurked beneath the cover. And if you read the word “kitten,” skip ahead a few pages. I did and I couldn’t be more glad

Gross. That's one word to describe this book. Gross. I thought the story was good. The plot of the book progressed pretty quickly and was really intense at some points. Being in Boy Scouts at that age made this book much more scary than it needed to be. There were ALOT of random tangents in this book that took you out of the plot. They were little stories that gave a look into the boy's lives outside of the island but they really didn't expand on the story for me. I skimmed a few of those because I just didn't care. I thought Shelley was a bit much as a character. This book was good, gross, and grotesque. I'm going to go take a shower now...

It was kind of a drag to get through this book, which is unfortunate bc this had a lot of horror tropes I personally enjoy. However, I found the ending to be pretty well done and probably the only reason I didn’t give this book a lower score.
My opinion of this book really went downhill once it was revealed that Shelley was a huge creep via details I wish I didn’t have to read.

After a long drought of reading, this was my first dive back in. I was able to read this in about a week and half. This book is definitely not for the faint of heart. Ot explored themes of survival, sickness, derangement and death. That being said author Nick Cutter did a good job without depressing the reader to the point where you would want to put the book down. The story maintains a glimmer of hope that leads to a minute amount of satisfaction. This was a gruesome story but I enjoyed it.
