Nic Stone does such an excellent job capturing Shuri's voice in this book. She's sassy, funny, and doesn't really want to fit into the roles her society wants her to. Instead of her princess duties, she'd rather spend time in her lab. For good reason! She's so smart and I can't wait to see what else she does. Can't wait to see what other adventures Shuri gets up to!

I want to start off with the aesthetic of this book. I love it. The edition I have is written in purple (like the words are purple!! So cool) which I think is a beautiful added touch. So already this book was off to a good start. But onto what actually matters...

Thoughts
This was highly enjoyable. If Marvel/DC is your thing this is the same but in book form. I love that we are following a girl I’m so tired of the Superhero genre being so male dominant this was a much needed perspective shift.

Things I liked:
- The friendship: if you enjoy reading about friendship this is one you might enjoy. The friendship develops over the course of the book and I love the direction it took. There was an abrupt turning point but it didn’t bother me too much.
- The Characters: I loved how unapologetically open and honest Shuri was. She knows who she is, she doesn’t take crap from people and she is super smart. Unrealistically so but I’ll get into that when I talk about my dislikes.
- The Journey: I am a sucker for an adventure story. I love to travel so I like seeing that aspect in books.

Things I didn’t like:
- Unrealistic: I just might not be exposed to people like this but Shuri is 13 in this book. And she is like genius level smart. She builds weapons, she has a lab where she can hold experiments. It’s insane. I think if they aged her up a couple of years it would have made it more believable for me.
- Unanswered question: there was one plot line that I felt wasn’t really closed off. There is a finish to it but I feel there could have been more to explore with this particular storyline
- The end: the ending was very abrupt. I was nearing the end and wondering how they were going to finish it but they did finish it but it felt rushed to me. But in saying that it made this book fast paced so if you’re in need of a fast paced book I think this is one you should consider.
