"I am a sign. I am your future. I am James."

I threw my kindle down and yelled “THAT BOOK WAS SO GOOD” when I finished. Winner of the 2024 National Book Award for good reason. The departure from source material in the middle of the book was fantastic and kept me on my toes. I was so invested in James's story.

Some scenes were hard to read, so mind the triggers. I would say they are all handled as mindfully as they can be, however, while also being visceral and real.

I highly recommend this book. The theme of language as power is prevalent throughout the book to illustrate levels of power and identities. James is a thoughtful character and seeing his perspective of the famous story the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn gives the story a new twist and much to reflect about.
