Agatha Christie always manages to fool me into suspecting the wrong person. I picked up this book because of another book I had read "Read to Death at the Lakeside Library" by Holly Danvers, which drew on some of the plot of Sparkling Cyanide. In the beginning we have Rosemary Barton, a wealthy heiress, killed by cyanide dissolved in her champagne in a swanky restaurant, the case is ruled as suicide but when her widower receives letters claiming his late wife was murdered, he decides to arrange a meal one year after her death inviting all those present at the original tragic incident but things don't turn out as he planned... It is left to Colonel Race to figure out whodunnit. I have read books by Ngaio Marsh and Dorothy L Sayers but for me Agatha Christie is the true Queen of this kind of murder mystery.
So, I really wanted to like this, I’m usually an Agatha Christie fan and I went in expecting all the clever twists and suspense she’s known for. But Sparkling Cyanide just didn’t do it for me. Honestly, I found it kind of… boring…
The premise sounded great; mysterious death at a dinner party, secrets unraveling, someone obviously lying, but the story just didn’t grab me. It felt slower than it needed to be, and I never really connected with any of the characters. The buildup dragged, and when the twist finally came, it didn’t feel very satisfying.
To be fair, most of my Christie experience is with Poirot and Miss Marple, so maybe I was just missing their charm or cleverness here. This one didn’t have that same spark or tension I usually love in her work. Definitely not the worst book ever, but for Christie, it felt underwhelming.
I know a lot of people enjoy this one, so maybe it’s just not for me, but yeah, bit of a letdown.
