I have mixed feelings about this book. I picked it up on the spot, from a friend, and chose it over too many others that were more important. And more or less, I knew what to expect. The first 200 pages were fine 13 not too spectacular, not too boring, then there was this peak, at about 250 I think, when I absolutely hated it and thought I would puke if I read another word. I eventually got over that. So by the end of the novel, it left me with a bit of cheery-happy feeling, and not just because that was what the author intended. I finally understood the purpose of hundreds of books of chick-lit, which are pretty much all the same and telling the same story. I saw how people related to it, how it was, yes, real, and mundane, and much like a long chit-chat with a good friend who 19s also a good story teller and also kind of funny and very honest about everything that happened in her life for a certain amount of time. So it 19s a slice of life, of girly life, of average life, you know, that type of life most of us have. It 19s not much to it. Really, that 19s all that it is to it. And the humor is sometimes predictable, and the happy ending is predictable, and the conclusions are predictable, and some things are just too good (Adam, for example), but that happens in books like this just all the time. And sometimes, well, in life, too.

This book is of its time so prepare yourself for lots of 90’s style fatphobia. That aside, it’s so funny!

Keyes delivers a delightful and witty read from start to finish. I've always adored how she writes her characters. Reading one of her novels feels like a good yap with your bestie on a Friday night over a glass of pinot noir. Delving into Claire's life is a satisfying gossip session with an unreliable narrator, led by her very distinct first person perspective on a journey that twists and turns with her emotional development and only begins to allow us full insight into the complexity and depth of her situation as she grows and learns from the people around her. It's a relatable journey of self-discovery where I find myself empathizing with the main character oh-so-easily.
Watermelon delivers a charming, easy read with deceptively complex subtext, foreshadowing, and little twists that have me constantly marveling at Keyes's magical method of wrapping up such complex themes and deep stories into such easily digestible packages. I truly enjoy every read by this author. A highly recommended read!

Best of all the Walsh books. I loved Claire. I think i related to her the most. Love her wit and sarcasm, and her emotions. Great book.
Drivel. Mindless nonsense. A chick lit book for people who really don’t read.
I can't decide whether to give it a 3 or a 4 - the books starts out strong, is a very good read, but in the end it comes out with nothing really special to stay in your mind. If you have some time to kill, might as well pick this one up - it won't strain your brain too much.
