This was one of those instances where the book has a low rating but I really end up liking the book. This slice of life contemporary book was so good! I definitely think that the best way to read this book is in a day; take short breaks but definitely try to finish it in a reading sprint. The main character's narration can be disjointed and fractured since she's so obsessed with this other woman. If you break the book up through days then the story might be boring and too broken up to follow. The ending makes sense to me with how everything plays out. I still wonder if the main character works at the hotel.

For me, the combination of listening to the audiobook while reading along with the ebook was a winning combination for me. The narrator's voice worked fabulously with all the male and female voices she had to do. I'll definitely look for more audiobooks that she narrates in the future.

delicious little thriller

This one was completely lost on me unfortunately. I didn’t really know what to expect, but this book is blurbed by some exceptional authors - the likes of Sayaka Murata, Yoko Ogawa and even Paula Hawkins - claiming it to be “chilling” and “powerful” but those feelings were lost on me. The Woman in the Purple skirt is a novel told from the perspective of another woman, the Woman in the Yellow Cardigan, who kind of just follows her, knows everything about her and keeps a diary of her activities. Sounds eerie, right? Yet it’s not, it’s monotonous and flat. I didn’t feel any of the obsessiveness or creepiness of the narrator, she just seems like a normal dull woman. The characters were all unlikeable and I don’t feel like the plot went anywhere. Granted, it’s a page turner, and a very quick read - I found myself compelled to read on to see if any of the suspense picked up, and if everything went unhinged and off the rails at the end (the potential was definitely there) but I was disappointed unfortunately. I’ll read more works from the author, in the hopes I enjoy them more but the Woman in the Purple Skirt gets 2/5 stars ⭐️⭐️
