There were moments when I thouight... thwarted again? But, all in all, I loved this book, flaws and all :)
Lord John is a very compelling character to read (and yes, the snippets of Jamie were absolutely wonderful, though very bittersweet)
Already started the next book, can't seem to stop.

To start, this second novel in the Lord John series was quite better than the first. We have much more character development as well family history revelations, battle scenes, near deaths, and many a scandal. For those who have read the Outlander books, The Brotherhood of the Blade spans a time in which John meets the soon to be notorious Percy Wainwright, attends Geneva Dunsany’s funeral, and asks Jamie for some political and personal insights. At its core, however, the story revolves around the death of Lord John’s father about 20 years prior, thought to be a suicide but which may have actually been murder. Regardless of the true cause, his death somehow stemmed from a Jacobite plot. Quelle intrigue🧐

Continuing my reread, it is 1758 and Lord John has been informed by his brother Hal that a great sodomite conspiracy is taking place, mysterious pages from their father’s missing journal turn up, and the truth is revealed about their father’s murder.
Reasons I Recommend:
1) Grey falling for Percy and being afraid to show those feelings in case anyone discovers it is bittersweet. He longs for a man he cannot have and hides part of himself away
2) The mystery, the angst, and the drama over Percy being discovered by Grey and another officer in an “illegal way” shows the dilemma Grey finds himself in and
3) Seeing the blatant homophobia, internal and external, and it being used an an excuse for a conspiracy is both fascinating and depressing as Grey has to choose between saving someone he loves and revealing his own “crime” or watching them be punished for the same “affliction” he has.

I love this one, possibly more than The Scottish Prisoner, because this is LJG's life outside of Jamie Fraser. This is John with his family, with his regiment, in battle, with friends. This is John trying to do the honorable thing, for Percy, for his father, for himself. Lord John Grey is such an excellent character, truly one of my very favorites amongst all the books I love and cherish and reread. LJG and Percy Jackson. lol.
John and Hal's mother is getting married, and when the husband-to-be shows up for their lunch date, he brings his step son Percy with him. John immediately recognizes him from a previous trip to the Lavender House, and gets REAL NERVOUS. But there's nothing to worry about because this is 18th century London and homosexuals don't get to be out and proud and themselves. As John and Percy get closer, I get SO EXCITED because again, I love LJG and I want ALL THE GOOD THINGS FOR HIM. Unfortunately, it isn't meant to be, and while out on campaign the shit hits the fan.
Now I'm trying to decide if I want to listen to all the short stories after all, or go into TSP and then back to Voyager.

I've always liked Lord John and I particularly enjoyed this because it so aptly describes his life both as a British Army officer and a homosexual in a time when being discovered as the latter can result in a death sentence. I'm looking forward to more Lord John books.
