There were almost too many names that at some point it was hard to keep track who you already read about and from which previous book the characters were. Nevertheless it was a great book and I really liked the conclusion of the mystery. I was a little sad about Percy but maybe we'll hear of him again!
I enjoyed this much more than the book of short stories about Lord John, probably mostly because it dealt more with John's personal life and loves. I realized after this book how much seeing the show has helped me when reading the books because I have an actor's face to put to a name. Keeping all of the characters in this book straight is a challenge.

It's been a while since i last read a Diana Gabaldon book, i followed her 'Outlander' series for a while but got distractes somehow.
I haven't read any other Lord John novel before and just saw this in the store and thought i'd give it a try since i remembered loving Gabaldons writing style a lot.
I enjoyed the book a great deal and read through it in three evenings. The characterisation was wonderful and i loved the historical setting. The mystery about Johns father was interesting though kept me rereading some parts because there where really a lot of characters to keep track of and i don't even remember most of it by now anymore because it was so tangled.
I loved the parts about the more personal site of John in this book. His feelings for his step-brother, the romance, the information we got about homosexuality in that century (distressing to read even if you know about it)... I admit i cried a little at the end.
I am def. looking forward to another 'Lord John' novel.

No where near as good as her original Outlander series.
2014 update: After listening to the audiobook version, I'll just reiterate my earlier comments: This is a must-read for Outlander fans, and the more Lord John audiobooks I listen to, the more I love Lord John as a character! He comes to life via audio in a way that's just so magical (kudos to the narrator!). I completely enjoyed this re-read!
I would definitely say that "Lord John & the Brotherhood of the Blade" is the best of Diana Gabaldon's Lord John books and novellas. "Brotherhood" is a tautly written mystery, action-adventure story, love story, and examination of a man's soul, all in one. Readers of the Outlander series have come to know Lord John as an interesting, somewhat enigmatic secondary character. In Brotherhood, John's family history is explored and the understanding of John's personal code of honor is greatly enhanced. Lord John is a heroic, honorable man, forced to hide his true nature by the strict code of his time. I would recommend reading Brotherhood prior to reading Echo in the Bone in the Outlander series. I hadn't, and realize now that I would have understood some of the plotlines in Echo much better had I read this one first. As an added bonus for devoted fans of Jamie Fraser, Himself makes several noteworthy, powerful appearances in Brotherhood. For fans of Diana Gabaldon's fictional world, Brotherhood of the Blade should not be missed.

I tried, but I just can't get into the Lord John novels!
I really like the Lord John books but so far the endings have been less exciting than I expected. I'm continuing to read the rest of them because I really like the book as a whole and how it develops Lord John's character further and shares some of his history and his adventures with us.
