3.95 AVERAGE

I hate how my kindle app automatically puts this as 'read' on here when I finish lol

Anywayyyyy, 4.5* and only dropped half a star as I feel like it could have been a TAD shorter. This is so so good and would highly recommend for fans of the poppy war !

Also if you like Anime (fullmetal alchemist, any other shounen) you will love the tropes in this. It's also delightfully gay (as in a lot of LGBT+ rep) and has avatar: the last airbender vibes

3.5 stars

I liked the idea for this book, but I just couldn't get into it and I don't know why.
In theory I loved the characters and the magic system, but while reading my thoughts just kept wandering and I was confused for a good chunk of the book tbh.
I had a hard time distinguishing our 4 main characters for some reason and kept forgetting what it was that we were supposed to be doing.

That being said, I did overall like this book. It was fun and the character interactions were what kept me going.

Solid 4.5 stars. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for the slow start.
Overall, I really enjoyed it.

v much not my thing. :(

"Now, do you find the terms agreeable or not?" Ruomei's mouth twisted. "I don't find them agreeable," she said. Then she sighed. "But I do agree." She gestured to the train platform. "Given your love of slumming, I imagine this will be a suitable venue for you." Xiulan beamed, "You do care, after all."

In the author's note, Paul Krueger says his hero is the person who started adding anime programming to Cartoon Network's Toonami block, and it shows. This book reads like an anime translated to page, something the reader should probably expect from its cover description of "Avatar meets Pokemon." I was surprised it wasn't marketed as YA (at least where I bought it.)

Steel Crow Saga follows a cast of interesting characters, mostly all trying to get a prince where he needs to go. Some people in this world can steel pact, bending metal to their will like in [a:Brandon Sanderson|38550|Brandon Sanderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1394044556p2/38550.jpg]'s Mistborn series. Others can pact with shades, animals that have been mutated into spectral Pokemon-esque creatures by accepting part of a person's soul. It's all over the top but in a fun way. The weakest points are when it tries to take itself too seriously.

I warmed up to the book as I went because the characters are mostly all so likable. I especially loved Xiulan, a royal wannabe detective. One quick other highlight: representation! This might be the best, most respectful writing about an openly trans major character that I have ever read.

It's a fun read. Shakespeare it's not. 3/5.

This was a great twist on the silkpunk genre. Four terrific central characters, a magic system I'm dying to learn more about (come on sequels!) and deftly structured and written political intrigue.

The world building in this book propelled me to finish it, despite the whiplash perspective change. I believe this could have been edited down to share the same story with more impact. Expect to see this on the screen within 10 years.

Remember kids it's not safe to bind with bandages and to only wear a binder for 8 hours a day

Follows a group of people who are looking for 1 person and they want different things to do with him. Gives off tiny Avatar vibes. Very LGBTQIA+ friendly. One of the main characters does a good amount of growing and learning.

I loved the world building in this book. I thought each character was really well written but I had a hard time following the plot. At times the book felt a little disjointed. I think my opinion on this is very personal, because I’m sure plenty of people enjoy that writing style—it just isn’t my thing.
