Once upon a time, I worked at a daycare. There was a little girl in my group named Corinne and while today she would probably be about eighteen, I'm imagining her at eleven-years-old as this Corinne. She was one of my favorites in the group and picturing her as the badass, kind, and mostly selfless girl in this book makes me smile.

And of course, in case it isn't obvious, I devoured this book because it's amazing!!!

Ugh, this one was just as cute and heartwarming as the first book. I really enjoyed it - I would actually say it's probably better with pacing and character development than the first book was.

The book continues shortly after Corinne's first adventure in The Jumbies . Now, she is left dealing with everyone in town treating her differently based on the events that happened in the last book. When children start to go missing, the town is quick to take sides, with many people turning against Corinne and blaming her for what is going wrong. Corinne, Dru, Bouki, and Malik must go on another adventure to find out what has happened to the children and to try and bring them home.

This is a really great story about racism without being overt about it - I can think of it as being a great read for some of my students, honestly. There's a gentle amount of fear and horror in the book, which is just enough to capture the interest of middle-grade readers without keeping them up all night. Baptiste is also great at weaving the stories together and giving enough foreshadowing to help the reader with their predicting skills. A really great read, overall - I can't wait to read the last book and see how the series ends.

As an aside, the book really would not work as a standalone. Readers would need to read the first book in order to appreciate and understand the secoind.

First off, the narration on this was absolute perfection. Her singing, accents, and different tones for male and female characters was spot on in my opinion. I hope she narrates the third book as well.

I really enjoyed this second installment to the series. There were a few points where I got bored, I don't remember them exactly, it is hard for me to remember every detail when doing audiobook format. I think what I most appreciated about this book is the touch on the lore of mermaids being kidnapped Africans that were part set to be part of chattel slavery. I think Baptiste did this in a fantastic way that middle grade kids would be able to grasp the concept of slavery and this lore really well.

I love learning about the lore of jumbies!

Corinne must, once again, show great strength and perseverance in this novel.  Children have been going missing, and the people blame Corinne. She must find the children and prove she is innocent.  I loved this book.  I look forward to reading the next book.
